The Mother & The Mercenary (The Umbrafell Duology #1) by KM Gordon:

A mother on the run from her haunted past.

A mercenary with secrets of his own.

In a kingdom ruled by corrupt men where certain magics are outlawed, public executions are a regular occurrence, and danger lurks around every corner, a mother searches for her missing son.

When Liana wakes to find her teenage son’s bed empty, her world falls apart. Determined to find the light of her life, she turns to her last hope: a renowned mercenary known as the Phantom. Rumors say he’s cruel, callous, and finds pleasure in causing others pain. But a mother will risk everything to rescue her child. Even hire the one who many deem a monster.

As Liana traverses through the kingdom with a ruthless killer, she learns he is much more behind the mask he wears. With a group of ragtag criminals by her side, Liana must face horrifying creatures, deadly forests and brewing feelings for the arrogant mercenary she can’t seem to ignore.

But the closer they get to the truth of Liana’s missing son, the more they unravel sinister secrets hiding behind the very leaders they are told to obey.

It isn’t the horrors that lurk in the dark that are to be feared, but those who hide in plain sight.

The Mother & The Mercenary is an adult dark romantasy with horror elements and dark themes. Please check trigger warnings on the author’s website.
