  • Get Ready for the New Year

As readers a new year means new reading challenges, a fresh slate or maybe we should say fresh shelves! Going into 2025 we want to give you tips and tricks to help make your year of reading even better! Clear Your Want to Read List Make space in your preferred reading tracker by removing books you no longer want to read or only have on your reading tracker from entering giveaways, looking at you GoodReads! Removing the books you don't want to read makes room for the next suggestions we have and frees up the digital clutter you might feel overwhelmed by when looking at all the books it seems you want to read. Clear Your Saved Posts List If you're like me, and I hope at least a few of you are, I have too many saved posts and reels on my social media platforms with book recommendations I might want to read in the future. Gradually take some time to clear out and move those posts from being saved to in your reading tracker want to read list. Unsave after you know you added it to your list, so you don't lose a book you truly want. But unsave as you go, or this digital declutter move won't be effective! Plus this gives you a clean slate to save other new to you books to be saved until the next time you update your lists. While you're at it, remove posts you had to save for giveaways or old stuff your kindle days! Clear Your TBR Pile Many have a physical to be read, aka TBR, pile that keep track of, some also have an electronic version also. Take the much needed time to transition books from this pile back onto your normal shelves or otherwise organization method. Your TBR pile isn't meant to be daunting it's meant to be exciting, so there's no guilt or shame in moving things you need to. As you head into the new year, many of us take part in reading challenges, set goals for yourself that are between reasonable and ideal, you want to be realistic and it is always better to crush your goal than reach the end of the year and feel a sense of false guilt that you failed. Reading any book, even just one, is a win every year! Organize Your Collection A new year is the perfect time to organize your collection whether in a new way or the same way. Take the time to clean and dust your shelves, you won't regret it and your books lifespan will thank you. Organize your books give you a change to not just clean but also assess your collection. Ignore the pressure to do an organization method you don't like, do what works for you by sticking to the same way but just tidying up misplaced things, but don't be afraid to try new things if you love the idea of color or genre organized! As you organize set aside to donate or gift to someone else books you didn't like or no longer want to read because your tastes have changed. Need tools to help you along? Organizing your books you want to read, keep as a TBR pile, or have read can be done several ways! Some people prefer the traditional method, writing it down, and having a dedicated journal for this purpose is the perfect way to record all the books you can dream of! More into digital methods? There are several quality reading trackers all with slightly different styles and user interfaces, but each brings benefits of their own. We won't get into specific details on each, we might save that for the new year, but several we have tried are: GoodReads, Fable, StoryGraph, and Bookly. Depending on your organization method and the size of your collection you may find large gaps on your shelves. A great way to eliminate the concern of books falling over or being damaged are bookends. The Crafty Bookstore has two great options to help you succeed that both offer functionality and beauty! Check out our Arched Bookends or our Alphabet Genre Bookends. How will you be getting ready for the new year? What are your reading goals? Turning pages, Crafting dreams

  • December New Releases to Check Out

December is full of gifts... namely new releases and many debut novels! At The Crafty Bookstore we want to help recommend a broad range of reads to not only challenge you to try new genres but also books we think will live up to the hype! These novels are in no particular order in terms of ranking but this month we are going to start with the debut authors because we all love when new voices take that first step into the world! Between Roses and Evergreens by Liliana Longoria This debut romantasy will steal you away with fae, beautiful world building, magic and giftings, and loads of secrets that just keep unfolding. Add in the reluctant allies to love interests, and there is much more to come in the sequel. The main character embarks on an unexpected mission, but is forced into forming a whole new plan as truths come to light. One of our Owner's was able to ARC read this book, and is very excited for its' release and of its' subsequent novels! Untethered by Gloria Bottleman This gothic fantasy debut, set to be part of a duology, will send you straight into a dark and dreary world with a main character stuck with a cruel past and a crueler present. All while unearthing a deathly mystery that is spreading rapidly. You 'll be entranced by the mystery and romantic tension between the main character and the unexpected helper she gains, and the nagging need to know what is behind this cruel death. One of our Owner's was also able to read this book as an ARC! In the Light of the Crystal Dawn by Cary Ash The debut fantasy mixes the contemporary world with a hidden realm of angels and demons sure to send you for a wild ride. When life goes from ordinary to another world, the main character is left with questions and as the truth unfolds there is something much greater and scarier at play that threatens everything. One of our Owner's was able to read this novel as an ARC also and this novel is just the beginning of a series. Broken Tides by A.M. Denelsbeck An apocalyptic setting that plunges the reader and main character into a world of survival and pirates? This debut takes fantasy and tosses it into a realm like Waterworld and Pirates of the Caribbean. ARC readers, which one of our Owners was one of, describe it as descriptive, with tension and romance and character development they could feel the pains of. The Last One by Rachel Howzell Hall While Hall is not new to the author game, she is making her debut in the romantasy world. Her novel promises monsters, witty banter, reluctant allies to lovers, and so many unexpected plot twists she clearly didn't leave her suspense skills behind on this one. ARC readers described it as new and refreshing and a unique perspective including memory loss as a major plot component. Trouble Island by Sharon Short This multi-novel author took a step away from cozy mysteries and dove into the world of historical suspense. This debut in the genre is inspired by a real island and bits from the authors' real family history, what could be more intriguing. Well let's add in it has gangsters, money, rivalries, secrets, and a murder, oh and we can't forget a storm. Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson Let's be honest this one hardly needs much described, because it is book five in the Stormlight Archive series and frankly Sanderson has a cult following, and for good reason! This book promises a continuation of the epic fantasy of the battle between good and evil, and the lengths the main characters must go to in order to bring about some form of freedom and salvation will be tested. The Party by Natasha Preston Tension, build up, and secrets are what make Preston novels a staple in the YA Thriller genre, not to mention her cliffhangers are to die for! Get it, cause sometimes someone does at the end and sometime you do because it finished you off instead? Well anyway, The Party offers just that a party among teenagers at a castle, but things go wrong, someone ends up dead and the rest is chaos as it unfolds! While there are mixed reviews on this from ARC readers, lovers of Preston's style all seemed to agree it was another top notch delivery. A Monsoon Rising by Thea Guanzon The sequel to The Hurricane Wars has arrived, and the first in the series had many readers drooling over the romantasy with a magical realm of light and dark literally clashing. Hopes are high for this follow-up that reports more scheming, more romance and tension, and more betrayal with high ratings from ARC readers. We think this one will not only follow-up well but will live up to it's hype as a sequel. Havoc by Christopher Bollen Few things in a psychological thriller are creepier than a child and Bollen has one square in the mix of this novel. But an elderly woman and the child go head to head and frankly that just has to draw you in. ARC readers described it as dark, twisty, and unexpected, claiming it did not disappoint and they did not see what was coming in this battle of the ages. We hope you get the chance to read one or more of these novels, and we love to hear what you guys think too! Remember a TCB blog rec is a square each month on book bingo, so use a novel from this list or previous ones to cross off that challenge with ease!

  • Interview with an Author - Amanda Russo

If you love Karen McManus, Holly Jackson, or Natasha Preston we have an author you need to check out! Amanda Russo. Amanda has been writing for a while, and from all her creativity she has now self-published two novels, with a third in progress. We are very excited to not only sell Amanda's novels, but she is also our first featured author at The Crafty Bookstore. We wanted to interview Amanda so you can get to know the person and the mind behind the novels Undergo and The Photo , and her many novels to come. TCB: You've written two thriller/horror novels, where do you get your ideas from for your books? Amanda: I'm sure this will be a surprise but most of my ideas come from walking. Either on my treadmill or outdoors. When I'm alone with my thoughts is when the creation begins. TCB: When you're in the midst of writing and that creative outpouring, what does your space and set up look like? Amanda:  I do most of my writing sitting on my couch or sitting outside, and I feel I write best when it's daytime. Surprisingly, music distracts me. I usually have a movie, or a show playing for background noise. I've been watching a lot of Friday the 13th and That 70's Show. TCB: You've told us before that books and movies were both very influential in you becoming an author. What books and movies influenced and inspired you the most, and what about them had such an impact? Amanda: There are so many movies and books that influenced me, but when narrowing it down it would be "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream." I love how insane Freddy is and how creative he is. "Scream" to me has a perfect combination of storytelling with the heart pounding fight for your life scenes to get to the ending battle where everything starts to boil. As for books, Stephen King's The Shining is one of my all-time favorite books. Then there is Meredith Wild with her novel Hardwired . I know this novel isn't in the genre I write, but the characters in Hardwired are my favorite characters I've read. TCB: What is the most helpful piece of advice you've received that encourages you to keep going with your writing and the publishing process? Amanda: It was something my Dad said to me. There was a time in my life I was very confused and scared to make the jump and write a novel, not just a short story. He said I have this fire in my eyes whenever I'm speaking about my stories to him, he said I have the same passion and same fire in my eyes when he wanted his career in the NYPD, and he did it. I will always remember that.  TCB: Your current books are stand-alone novels; do you think you might write a series? Amanda: As of right now, I have no plans for a series. But you never know what the future holds. TCB: What has proved to be the hardest part about being an author, and what tricks have you found to help you overcome some of the struggle? Amanda: One of the hardest parts about being an author is making sure the timeline makes sense. I sometimes forget what day or time it is in the chapter and when that happens it can throw many things off for me.  TCB: We are animal lovers here and want to know do you have any pets, and if so what kinds and what are their names? Amanda: I have 5 pets. A dog and 4 cats. My dog is a Corgi and her name is Daphne. My cats are Taz, Jay Jay, Nelle, and Talia. They all get along amazingly. TCB: Between your two books, if you were magically pushed into one as a character, which one would you choose to be stuck inside of? Amanda: I would say Dani from The Photo. I think she is strong and I love her mindset when it comes to caring for the people in her life.  TCB: If you could give younger you a piece of advice you wished you knew sooner, what would it be? Amanda: I would tell myself not to be so hard on myself. I would have many ideas swarming in my head and would beat myself up for not being able to focus on one thing at a time. I would say you are doing a good job and take it easy. TCB: Of all your characters thus far, which is your favorite and which is your least favorite, and why? Amanda: It is hard to choose a favorite character because they all are special to me, but I had to choose one. I would say Maxy from Undergo. As for my least favorite character, that spot is filled for someone in my novel I'm creating now. When you read it you'll understand why. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to interview Amanda and bring a little bit about her to all of the visitors at The Crafty Bookstore. Amanda's newest novel The Photo was released October 8, 2024, we can attest as we have read it that it's a solid spooky read! The Crafty Bookstore currently has signed copies of both her novels Undergo and The Photo available for purchase separately or in a bundle. We hope you'll support this amazing indie author in her creative journey and follow along on her social media accounts for more exciting developments.

  • November New Releases We Recommend You Check Out

November is a big month for the literary world, there are a ton of great new releases coming out and it might be hard to decide what to read. At The Crafty Bookstore we want to help recommend a broad range of reads to not only challenge you to try new genres but also books we think will live up to the hype! These novels are in no particular order, but do include a variety of genres! A Tribute of Fire by Sariah Wilson This book will be the first in a series referred to as The Eye of the Goddess . One of our owners had the pleasure of being an ARC reader for this novel and it lives up to the hype! The drama, the dilemmas, the development of relationships and connections but also surprises! We highly recommend this Fantasy-Romantasy read of trials, survival, struggle, and slow burn romance. Servant of Earth by Sarah Hawley The beginning of The Shards of Magic series, this novel promises the oh so loved fae with magic and a unique world building many advanced readers enjoyed. Elements, a tyrannical king, deadly trials, a rebellion and of course romance are present in this fantasy many have compared to A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Cruel Prince. Revenant-X by David Wellington The sequel to Paradise-1 and continuation of the Red Space  series, Wellington delivers the mix of horrors with science fiction by taking you back into space and the terrifying trials that await one crew. If you love the Alien movies, or body horror, we think this book might just be up your alley. Where the Library Hides by Isabel Ibanez This novel is the second and final installment in The Secrets of the Nile duology. This Historical Fiction is a combination of The Mummy and Death on the Nile, and some even compared to Indiana Jones has a lot to live up to, but we feel confident the second book will deliver the promise just as the first did. The Songbird & the Heart of Stone by Carissa Broadbent The third in the Crown of Nyaxia series and the first in a spinoff called The Shadowborne Duet , this series has captivated readers into a love it or hate it realm. We've talked to several in both and it seems the excitement is abuzz for this vampire drama. This novel promises betrayal, trials, and an adventure into the underwold not unlike Dante. The Lake of Lost Girls by Katherine Green A mystery/thriller with multiple timelines that leads you to the terrifying reality of how one girl's sister disappeared. The novel promises true crime culture, lies and deception wrapped in a captivating storyline of family that never stops fighting for the ones the love. ARC reviews say this book with leave you with twists and turns you aren't expecting! We Shall Be Monsters by Alyssa Wees A dark family focused fairy tale filled with creatures and monsters, and magic galore, this novel has blown advanced readers away with high ratings. For lovers of Fae, mysterious forests, and a redemption storyline we think this is a good choice. The Courting of Bristol Keats by Mary E. Pearson Slated to become a duology, this book is filled with family deception, unlikely alliances, gods and monsters, and romantasy. The hype is real on bookstagram, and from ARC readers it is accurately placed on this novel. Many are even saying they don't know how to handle waiting for the second book, reading slumps may ensue after this read. A Cruel Kindness by Rory L. Scott Imagine merging the words of fantasy and romance in the atmosphere of space. Fated mates, forbidden love, and interstellar travel all fill the beginning of a new series by this indie author. One of our Owners is a member of the ARC team and gives it two thumbs up already! A Very Bad Thing by J.T. Ellison Another thriller has arrived, and this bestselling author took a great plot twist moment, the main character who doesn't make it... a hit selling author! The psychological turns and the search for a criminal and the facts behind the crime are unmatched according to ARC reviews and we think lovers of the genre should definitely check this novel out. The Road of Bones by Demi Winters Vikings, forbidden love, wrapped in immersive world building and oh we can't forget it will be part of a series! We think this romantasy with a historical twist with fill a nice gap in the popular genre. ARC reviews are the highest of the list and we think this means you should consider this book for your next read! Pike Island by Tony Wirt The past is never dead, and this book takes that concept to come back with a bite for one politician and the haunting mail he receives. Those around in begin to question, and our question becomes does his secret remain hidden or eventually does it all come to light, and what is that secret anyway? The Serpent and the Wolf by Rebecca Robinson Political intrigue, magic, arranged marriage, unlikely alliances and betrayals all are packed in this, currently standalone but talk is coming of a second, novel. ARC readers say the world-building is captivating, and the romance is a well-placed subplot that doesn't dominate the whole novel. The Estate by Sarah Jost Magic that sends you into the world of a piece of artwork... sign us up! This interesting mix of thriller and fantasy sounds unique with a touch of historical, the book is described by many ARC readers as a page turner and not everything is as it seems. The Swarm by Andy Marino We can't have a list of book recommendations without at least one creature feature. Combining the world of police investigation with crime, cults, and the horror of insects ravaging the world we know. ARC reviews show the descriptions are top notch, graphic and sometimes gory and the novel sucks you in with multiple points of view. Darkly by Marisha Pessl This YA novel includes a mix of dark academia, gothic mystery, and maybe even a little horror. An internship with a company turns dark and even dare we say deadly for a group of teens. ARC reviews say it's a dark and twisted game that leaves you unclear on what's game and what's real with a highly developed plot.

  • Interview with an Author - TM Mayfield

If you love mermaids, fae, and slow burn romance, think Tricia Levenseller's Daughter of the Pirate King series or Alexandra Christo's To Kill A Kingdom, then we have an author you need to check out! TM Mayfield. TM, otherwise known as Taylor, has been writing fantasy for several years now, and her creative spirit has led to a massive multi-verse planned! (Think SJM connections between books.) We are very excited to call Taylor one of our Featured Authors and sell her novels. And of course, what better way to get to know someone than through an interview, so meet the mind behind The River Queen and The Fae's Deceit , and her many sequels and novels to come, because there are many planned! TCB: Every writer is different when it comes to their atmosphere, when you're in the midst of writing and that creative outpouring, what does your space and set up look like? Taylor: There’s noise everywhere! Between kids and my playlists I curate for each book, I thrive in the chaos. I usually write at our dining room table with the snack of the day and at least three drinks, usually a water, something with caffeine, and a Sonic Route 44. TCB: Are there any books or movies that influenced and inspired you to become an author, and what about them had such an impact? Taylor: So many of the Disney movies from my childhood helped me, especially the ones derived from old fairytales and folklore. TCB: You've written several novels and even have a multi-verse in progress, where do you get your ideas from? Taylor: Honestly, I just kind of let my wild imagination take over, it can get kinda crazy sometimes. TCB: What part of your multi-verse is proving to be your favorite so far, and which one do you think readers will love the most? Taylor: So far, I’m adoring the novella in working on. It’s giving me so many ideas for future books! And honestly, I think going into book 3 of The Stonemaw Chronicles may end up being a favorite. There’s so much feminine rage and the villainess era that’s coming… it’s going to be fantastic! TCB: What has proved to be the hardest part about being an author and what tricks have you found to help you overcome some of the struggle? Taylor: Marketing is hard! I have such a hard time sometimes with balancing writing, editing, marketing, and home life. Usually, marketing ends up taking the hit. TCB: What is the most helpful piece of advice you've received that encourages you to keep going with your writing and the publishing process? Taylor: Just keep going. You can’t edit an empty page and even bad writing is better than none. The more you do, the more you grow as an author. TCB: If you could give younger you a piece of advice you wished you knew sooner, what would it be? Taylor: I would tell myself to start sooner! I wish I wouldn’t have waited so long to started writing. This has honestly been one of the best years of my life. TCB: On a lighter note, we're big pet and animal lovers so we have to ask, do you have any pets, and if so what kinds and what are their names? Taylor: We have three cats! Rennick is our orange cat, Gibby is our grey cat, and Shadow is our fluffy black cat who thinks he is allowed to lay on my books. TCB: Of all your characters thus far, which is your favorite and which is your least favorite, and why? Taylor: Vefa is my favorite! He seriously gives himbo vibes, but he’s honestly so angry and calculated. I can’t wait to show more of that side of him. My least favorite is Dolion. He’s such a douche and just all-around icky dude. TCB: If you were magically pushed into one of your books as a character, which book and character would you choose to be? Taylor: I’d love to be pushing into one of my cozy fantasies. Smallburrow is such a fun world and Kaida is a character I identify with so much. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to interview Taylor and bring a little bit about her to all of the visitors at The Crafty Bookstore. Taylor has two novels available in her Stonemaw Chronicles series, with The Fae's Deceit just released on November 7, 2024! The Crafty Bookstore currently has signed copies of both her novels The River Queen and The Fae's Deceit available for purchase separately or in a bundle with some author exclusive swag! We hope you'll support this amazing indie author in her creative journey and follow along on her social media accounts for more exciting developments.

  • 13 Spooky Reads to Halloween

The one thing anyone with cable knows best around this time of year is the ultimate movie marathon... 31 Days of Halloween or the OGs might remember the 13 Days/Nights of Halloween. While we are avid readers here at The Crafty Bookstore, we are also avid movie watchers! And readers and movie watchers alike call this time the spooky season for good reason. The weather is cooler, the nights drift sooner, and we need our entertainment to match the darkening. But for us readers it has a little extra to it, we need words to chill us to our bones, to make us forego the tiny book lights to turn on the overhead lights. Words that make us go wide eyed, slack jawed, and gasping aloud. We need the haunting, the ghoulish, and the fiendish to come alive with words. So, to help you succeed in this feat we offer to you 13 books to make it to Halloween, some with movie adaptations, because we want to create the spooky atmosphere you seek! Some of these books are even in our store, so why not give them a home on your shelves. 13 Spooky Reads to Halloween (in no particular order) The Photo by Amanda Russo - Available in our store This paranormal suspense follows high school friends who make a terrible decision one Halloween night and immediately begin to suffer the consequences. The line between nightmares and reality blur with horrific results. You'll never play a spooky game on Halloween night again after reading this novel! Carrie by Stephen King Stephen King is a classic, renowned among the horror genre, so of course we have to include at least one. While Carrie might not truly be the scariest of King's novels, a teenage girl that can destroy things with her mind is pretty terrifying. And if you haven't read the book, the extent of her destruction is far worse than in the movie, not to mention her mom is way crazier! (Movie adaptation: 1976 by Brian De Palma) Phantoms by Dean Koontz A monster and supernatural filled ride to a small mountain town will leave you confused about who and what is causing such destruction. An unlikely group bands together to solve the mystery, but let's just say something things cannot be prepared for. Koontz is best known for his thrillers, but his exploits in horror do not disappoint! (Movie adaptation: 1998 by Joe Chappelle) The Town the World Forgot by Boris Bacic If you love mysterious towns, creepy townsfolk who will barely acknowledge visitors, a storm that sets off the chaos, and something evil lurking in the night... well this book just might be for you! The beginning of a series, this novel follows two people who end up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Seven Sins by Miguel Estrada Do you wanna play a game? If jigsaw was here, even he would say no thank you! This novel is every bit a mix of Saw and Seven (what’s in the box?!). A rollercoaster of graphic details and tension, leaving you to wonder who the mastermind behind these awful deeds is. There is a content warning for this book, so check for concerns before diving in. Hollow by Davide Tarsitano A writer, a cop, and a exorcist walk into a house. This isn't a joke, it's the three main characters in this police procedural meets suspense and horror novel. A mysterious murder, overwhelming grief, and the sense something is more than it seems is the primary focus. A supernatural entity is at work, but how can it be proved and how can it be stopped? The Chestnut Man by Soren Sveistrup - Available in our store Nordic Noir is a must for any lover of thrillers and this one is no exception. You are thrown into the mix of gruesome and graphically detailed murders, a police investigation, all while wondering who is the person leaving behind chestnut men at these scenes? (Netflix series: The Chestnut Man) House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski If you like labyrinths, puzzles, and codes this book might just be for you. It's avant-garde mixed with a bit of inception of a story within a story. There are multiple narrators, confusion and the people who enjoyed said it kept them up and messed with them! Is that a selling point, it might be... The Ritual by Adam Nevill It wouldn’t be a well-rounded list without at least one folk horror novel. The Ritual combines the terrifying reality of being lost in the woods, with the fear inducing feeling of something evil and unnatural stalking. (2017 movie adaptation by David Bruckner) Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes We didn't forget lovers of science fiction, horrors in space seem the most likely thing of all. And this novel brings it well! A distress signal in space, an unexpected find, and a swelling panic because where did all the passengers go. The Lost Village by Camilla Sten - Available in our store If you enjoyed Midsommar and/or The Blair Witch Project this book blends them both into a Nordic nightmare.
